Chapter fifteen

Jace’s Farewell

Lavender was powerless to stop what was coming. The contract had been signed. Despite the unsubstantiated claim of seeing both the Queen and Sorch together, very much in the forefront of her mind, Lavender had nothing. She had no cards she could play, no leverage that she could utilise to put herself in a better position. That was a first for her. Jace would be lost to the dream emporium, and she had nothing she could do about it.

Lavender and Violet had taken theradarts back to the dream emporium. The doorbell chimed over Lavender’s head as she entered to absolute chaos. Scarlett was behind the counter, her wand out in her hand as she tried to control the crowd.

“No! Please, put that down! Don’t take that off the shelf, please!”

Lavender and Violet leapt into action. These faeries were here trying to get their hands on the ever-elusive Jace Experience collection. A collection that would soon be leaving the dream emporium’s shelves forever. There was no way that Scarlett could contain them all herself. She saw Lavender and Violet enter, and an expression of happiness split across her face. She had backup.

“Right!” Lavender’s wand exploded with a sound like a gunshot and the rabble of faeries in the emporium went quiet. Many of them turned to see what had caused the noise, fearing the worst. Now that she had their attention, Lavender exploded in her own right.

“What the fuck do you think you’re all doing? The shop is shut, ladies. Put your purchases back on the shelves where you found them or my wand will go up your asses,” Lavender said. She held her other hand on her hip and pouted. “And unlike when Jace did it in some of those memories, you won’t enjoy it!”

Silence filled the emporium for a moment before the sound of dozens of faeries moving towards the door filled the air. Lavender and Violet stepped aside, watching in case any faerie had tried to sneak a jar outside. As she watched the emporium clear out, Lavender raised her hand to stop one faerie, a short teenager with bubble-gum pink hair. She was definitely not of the legal to age to be watching Jace do his thing.

“What have you got there?” Lavender asked.

The faerie kept her head down. “Nothing.”

Lavender swished her wand in the air and the dream jar lifted itself from the faerie’s patchwork bag. Lavender waited until the jar had landed in her hand and spun it around, reading the label on the front.

The Exploration of Jace.

“Right, well this certainly isn’t appropriate,” Lavender said. “You shouldn’t be here. Do you want me to inform your mother?” The faerie shook her head, looking more than disappointed that Lavender had spoiled her plan. “Good, I should hope not. Now get out and don’t come back.”

With the emporium now returned to a less frenzied state, Lavender looked around at the mess that had been left. On one shelf, Lavender spotted a handful of broken dream jars. She tutted.
